Our Thanksgiving Favorites

Thanksgiving is a favorite holiday in our home. It is a time when we gather with dear friends and family and celebrate each other and all that we are thankful for. We make all of the traditional Thanksgiving favorites, but make them refined sugar free, grain and gluten free and blood sugar friendly. I hope you find a way to incorporate some new ideas and recipes into your Thanksgiving traditions. Wishing you and yours a beautiful, healthy day filled with good eats and lots of togetherness and warmth. Beth and Dr. B

Savory Paleo Stuffing with keto and low carb options
This savory stuffing recipe is a great alternative to the bready and carby traditional stuffing but keeps all of the flavor! I have created this recipe with 3 alternatives as the "bread". You may use traditional cornbread, low carb keto bread (store bought or homemade) or you can use cubed sweet potatoes in place of the bread, you choose but any way you make it, it will be delicious!

Cornbread Biscuits
If you follow a gluten free diet you may be worried that you won't be able to enjoy biscuits anymore. Well, worry no more because these gluten free cornbread biscuits are moist and delicious!
Protein-rich almond flour, polenta, and real corn come together for a rich, flaky biscuit that can be eaten any way you usually eat biscuits.
I like to serve these biscuits with this Spicy Chili, this Paleo Meatloaf with Mushrooms or this Swiss Chard and White Bean Soup. The biscuits are also great on their own as a snack with some goat cheese or with a dip like this Savory Pumpkin Seed Dip.

This is the Method Dr. B uses to cook our Thanksgiving Turkey
We have been cooking our Thanksgiving turkey in our weber grill for many years now. The turkey is flavorful and moist and best of all, it frees up oven space for all of our side dishes!

Ina Garten’s Make-Ahead Turkey Gravy with Onions & Sage
Ina Garten's make ahead gravy recipe is perfect when cooking the turkey on the weber grill. I can make this gravy base days ahead of time, saving loads of time on Thanksgiving day. I substitute the flour in this recipe for arrowroot or cassava flour and it works perfectly. On Thanksgiving, just add turkeys drippings to this made ahead gravy base and it is ready to serve!

How to Brine a Turkey: Dr. B calls this “turkey tea”
Dr. B makes his turkey tea the day before Thanksgiving on the stovetop. Once the brine or the "tea" is cool, he lines a cooler with a plastic bag and soaks the turkey overnight in the brine. This adds additional flavor to the turkey and ensures that the turkey is super moist.

Low Sugar Apple Crumble (Apple Crisp) Recipe
Who doesn't love apple crumble? Sweet, chewy apples tossed in cinnamon and spices with a rich crumb topping is the absolute best! I have had a request for a lower-sugar apple crumble so here it is! I have used alternative, better-for-you sweeteners, and upped the fiber and fat content to try to achieve a healthier, lower-carb, lower-sugar dessert. Fruit desserts are always tricky when it comes to leveling blood sugar due to their sugar content while chocolate desserts are more reliable due to their higher fat content.  This dessert, however, with just 15 net carbs, when eaten at the end of a healthy meal, produced a stable glucose response!

Whipped Coconut Cream Recipe (vegan whipped cream)
Coconut whipped cream is the perfect dairy free alternative whipping cream or heavy cream. Coconut cream whips up nicely and only has a couple ingredients. Best of all it's paleo, vegan, gluten free and dairy-free so it is good for anyone following a special diet.
I love serving it on this Apple Crumble recipe and this Chocolate Torte. Give it a try!
