Low Sugar Apple Crumble (Apple Crisp) Recipe

Who doesn’t love apple crumble? Sweet, chewy apples tossed in cinnamon and spices with a rich crumb topping is the absolute best! I have had a request for a lower-sugar apple crumble so here it is! I have used alternative, better-for-you sweeteners, and upped the fiber and fat content to try to achieve a healthier, lower-carb, lower-sugar dessert. Fruit desserts are always tricky when it comes to leveling blood sugar due to their sugar content while chocolate desserts are more reliable due to their higher fat content.  This dessert, however, when eaten at the end of a healthy meal, can produced a stable glucose response!

I recommend you eat your meal in the following order to maintain a stable blood sugar level: salad or veggies first, protein and fat and fiber second, and dessert last. For extra assurance that this will produce a level glucose response, plan to go for a walk after your meal!

Enjoy this apple crumble with your favorite low-carb ice cream, unsweetened whipped coconut cream, or full fat unsweetened whipped dairy cream.  Or try it with this Whipped Coconut Cream recipe.

FAQs

Do I have to peel the apples?

I prefer to peel the apples before baking with them but you don’t have to. If you like the peels then keep them on.

Is there a substitute for psyllium husk flakes?

I don’t recommend substituting the psyllium husk flakes. They are required to bind the crumb topping.

Is there anything I can substitute for the gelatin to make the apple crumble vegan?

A good vegan substitute for gelatin is usually agar agar but I haven’t tested it in this recipe.
