Dark Chocolate Dipped Strawberries

I first had dark chocolate dipped strawberries when a friend sent them to my husband and I as an anniversary present. Chocolate and strawberries are such an incredible combination that come strawberry season each year, I like to recreate those first dipped strawberries that we enjoyed so much. You can definitely make these throughout the year though I find local, fresh strawberries have the best flavor.

So simple yet so good, these strawberries are great for an afternoon snack, a weekend brunch or you can even serve them at your next dinner party. They look fancy but are so simple and everyone loves them.

If you enjoy chocolate as much as I do, you may also like these other chocolate recipes; Chocolate Whey Protein Balls, these Crunchy No Bake Peanut Butter Chocolate Cups or this Flourless Triple Chocolate Banana Bread.

Why You’ll Love These Dark Chocolate Dipped Strawberries

You really can’t go wrong with these dark chocolate covered strawberries. A real crowd pleaser that tastes great any time of day. Simple to make with minimal prep and very few ingredients required. They look nice too!

Ingredients To Make Chocolate Dipped Strawberries

  • Strawberries – Choose large, ripe strawberries. Wash and dry them completely before dipping.
  • Dark chocolate baking chips – I like Lily’s, use these Hu Kitchen (use code NEST to save 15%). If you can’t find either of these chocolate chips, choose a sugar free dark chocolate bar.
  • Coconut oil – A touch of coconut oil helps thin out the chocolate. If you don’t want any coconut taste choose an unflavored coconut oil.

Equipment

How To Make Dark Chocolate Dipped Strawberries

  • Place the chocolate and coconut oil in the glass bowl over a pan of boiling water (a double boiler) on medium heat. Stir occasionally until the chocolate is completely melted and coconut oil is incorporated. You want the chocolate to be thin enough to easily coat the strawberries.
  • Lay a sheet of parchment paper on a sheet pan. Dip strawberries one at a time in the melted chocolate and place on the parchment paper.
  • Once you have dipped all of your strawberries, place the sheet pan in the refrigerator until the chocolate hardens.
  • Enjoy!

Storage

If you have leftovers, keep them in an airtight container in the refrigerator. They won’t last long if your strawberries are fresh so plan to enjoy them within a day of dipping. If you can’t finish off your batch of strawberries put them in the freezer.

Pro Tips

Here are a few things you can do to ensure your chocolate strawberries turn out well every time.

  • Choose large, uniform strawberries as they are easier to coat in chocolate.
  • Any kind of dark chocolate is good whether it be chocolate chips or a bar. Just choose unsweetened good quality chocolate for the best flavor.
  • For more texture you can roll the strawberries in coconut flakes or chopped nuts or seeds.
  • Leave the stems on the strawberries so you can easily lift them.
  • Don’t waste leftover chocolate! Dip other fruit you have on hand; bananas, apples, oranges, raspberries. Or store leftover chocolate in the fridge to use another time.

FAQs

Is dark chocolate better for strawberries?

I prefer dark chocolate due to its lower sugar content. The higher the cocoa content the better. The bitterness of the chocolate complements the sweetness of the ripe strawberries well. The perfect combination!

Are strawberries dipped in chocolate healthy?

Yes, strawberries dipped in dark chocolate can be considered healthy. Both strawberries and chocolate contain antioxidants that may help support a healthy immune system. Just don’t overdo it and add sugar or choose sugar-laden chocolate.

Why won’t the melted chocolate stick to the strawberry?

If you can’t get the chocolate to coat the strawberry it could be because the strawberry is wet. Pat the berries dry and let them sit on the counter for a minutes so there is no moisture left on them.
