How to Make Paleo Baked Beans

These Paleo Baked Beans are easy to make, though they require a lot of time in the slow cooker. The best part is that they can be made ahead of time and reheated when you’re ready to eat.

  1. Drain the beans, reserving the liquid. Cook the bacon in a pan, and drain off any excess fat.
  2. In a saucepan combine the syrup, salt, pepper, mustard powder, ketchup, Worcestershire, and honey. Bring to a boil over medium-high heat, stirring occasionally.
  3. Place beans, onions, and bacon in a crockpot and pour sauce over the top. Add the reserved bean liquid if needed to cover the beans completely.
  4. Cook on high in the crockpot for 12 hours.

Storage

These baked beans can be stored in an airtight container in the fridge for up five days, or frozen for up to 3 months. When you’re ready to eat them, simply reheat them in a pot on the stove over low heat until warmed through.

You can also reheat these beans in the microwave, though be sure to do so in short intervals so that they don’t explode. Simply place them in a microwave-safe dish and heat them in 30-second increments, stirring in between, until they’re heated through.

Pro Tips

  • If you can’t find navy beans, feel free to substitute them with any other type of bean that you like.
  • Instead of honey, you can use stevia or monk fruit to sweeten these homemade baked beans.
  • Dried beans can also be used for this recipe, however, you will need to soak them overnight, rinse them and then add them to the slow cooker.
  • You can grease your slow cooker with some coconut oil or avocado oil before you add the baked beans so that clean-up is a breeze.
  • I used a nitrate-free bacon such as Greenfield or Applegate.
